Canine Lullabies CD Calms Dogs and Puppies!

Since 1985, the same heartbeat nursery songs on this Canine Lullabies CD have been played in over 8,420 hospitals and special care centers to help calm infants and children.

For years I considered verifying claims by trainers, friends, and frazzled parents who said the same music that stopped their baby’s crying also calmed their dog. I didn’t pursue the possibility that the same music might really calm dogs, because I felt my calling from God was about children — I had left a successful music business career to spread the medical and home use of this music to help preemies, infants, toddlers, and frazzled parents.

But everyone at our office was certainly moved the day we got an e-mail from a mother in South Dakota. She wrote how their golden retriever puppy had gone into a coma after a serious operation and wasn’t expected to live. Her children decided to play their Baby-Go-To-Sleep CD around the clock for their puppy in hopes it might help. On the third day she heard her children crying. Their puppy had awakened and had run to the door to go outside...

I was still skeptical that the music had contributed to the recovery. Through the years working with the medical community I’ve learned that we live in a world where everything has to be proven scientifically. Most people find it hard to accept simple solutions for complex problems. But this mother’s story, along with other reports, made me curious enough to visit my local pet stores to check out what’s being sold to calm dogs.

Since I haven’t owned a dog in years, it was a rather amazing experience. What don’t they make for dogs these days? I even saw a device that’s supposed to translate a dog’s emotions. The owner gets a read-out of feelings the dog is trying to express from the sound of his bark. Is this yet another marvel of modern science or what?

But for dogs who are anxious and uncontrollable barkers, I found only shock collars, tranquillizers, and a plug-in-the-wall device that sprays a synthetic pheromone around the dog to mimic what’s produced by female dogs when nursing. When I searched the web, I found a sonic collar that emmits a loud unpleasant but harmless audible sound to deter your dog’s barking.

Back at my office, I stuck a Las Vegas TV news segment in the VCR and watched it one more time. I watched as both a baby and a dog conked out to our Baby-Go-To-Sleep Heartbeat Music Therapy CD. That got me thinking. There must be millions of barking dogs and whining puppies keeping families awake at night. Don’t dogs bark and get upset for many of the same reasons babies cry? If my music really worked for pets, playing our CD would be a more dog-friendly calming method than any of the products I’d just seen in the pet stores.

Incessant crying is the primary trigger for shaken-baby syndrome and infant abuse. Over 510,000 of our recordings have been distributed by professional organizations to stop incessant crying and help prevent infant abuse. If incessant barking is one of the primary triggers for the abuse of dogs, then stopping the barking, might also prevent animal abuse.

In September 2003 I got an opportunity to verify whether the music really works to calm anxious dogs. I was invited to write the lead article for the October 2003 issue of “Boarderline,” official newsletter of the American Boarding Kennel Association. I told our story, gave reasons why the music might work, and asked the member kennel owners to help evaluate it.

Many kennel owners already play background music during the day on kennel-wide overhead speaker systems. Playing classical music, smooth jazz, oldies radio or talk radio are the typical choices. And ones their employees enjoy. Employees who thought our nursery songs with a heartbeat were going to be the all-day substitute for their favorite music threatened to quit!

By March 2004, ninety-three kennel owners reported playing our music at a low volume calmed their dogs and stopped or reduced barking. Frankly, I was amazed. Even more dramatic results were achieved when the CD was played on a portable player for 30 to 60 minutes at a time to calm an anxious dog or small groups of barkers. Some claimed that playing the CD on overhead systems at night or for short periods during the evening hours resulted in fewer accidents and less diarrhea.

Their enthusiasm was contagious. But when I read an article from the April 29, 2004, Honolulu Star-Bulletin my adrenaline really started flowing.

In the Honolulu Zoo, aggressive young male Chimpanzees had smashed a $50,000 glass window in the viewing room and had been hurting each other. University of Hawaii professor, Doctoral researcher Joe Ruszkowski with help from Dr. Arthur Harvey developed a pilot study to determine whether playing our heartbeat music therapy recordings would calm the aggressive chimps. The music was played during the chimp’s most aggressive period. Within 15 minutes, some of the chimps were so relaxed they were falling asleep. Primary chimpanzee keeper, Greg Hamilton, said that had never happened before.

Since our Heartbeat Therapy Music is reportedly calming dogs and chimpanzees, there are probably other animals who will respond the same way. Have we discovered the music that truly soothes the savage beast? So why would animals choose to listen to and be calmed by nursery songs with a heartbeat?

If my theory is correct, puppies and mature dogs, and possibly other animals, are attracted to our music and calmed by it for many of the same reasons it attracts and calms infants and children. Not only do dogs and most other animals hear much better than we do, but they have an extraordinary ability to selectively focus on and listen to specific sounds they choose to hear. They can block out or habituate to unwanted sounds in the environment.

Music is mathematical relationships of sound through time. The simple songs on this CD were crafted by incorporating the basic principles of relaxation and learning in the musical arrangements. Like human babies, dogs seem to be attracted to the mathematical simplicity of the music, the compassion in the singers’ voices, and the familiar human heartbeat sound. They learn and are calmed by the same basic relaxation principles of simplicity, repetition, predictability, ordered structure, and consistent tempo that we humans are.

Obviously, the lyrical messages of the songs are not relevant. The music has a therapeutic effect because it gives both dogs and babies a non-threatening, safe haven to psychologically “flee” to when they are anxious or experiencing the fight-or-flight response. In fact, considering the applications of this music to traumatized children, I am wondering if animal rescue workers may find our music particularly helpful.

Whether my theories about music and animals are correct or not, your pet likes to be pampered just like babies do. They like to feel safe, calm and at peace. That’s what pet owners and kennel owners tell us this music does for their dogs, and what research has shown it does for infants.

Independent clinical research confirms that playing our CD calms babies on life support and during painful and or frightening medical procedures. It helps children who have been severely traumatized or abused. Plus, parents in over 2.5 million homes have played it to help their baby stop crying and sleep through the night. Even though I have tried to give a logical explanation as to why this music works, it is not a miracle of modern science nor is it magic. In a way, it is something more. I believe that God calls us as human beings to not only help other humans, but also to be stewards of all creation.

When I first saw these songs bring calm and healing to agitated babies in a Cardiac Recovery Unit, I was confident in my talent but not egotistical enough to think I somehow intentionally created music so powerful it could help save a baby’s life. Through a series of events, God made it clear to me that He was instrumental in the creation of this music and had special uses for it. I never anticipated it might be used to bring peace to dogs and other pets. But now that seems somehow right. God cares about people, yes — but God cares about and loves all his creatures. His desire is for them to have the same health, happiness, and peace, that we pray to receive ourselves.

For years I held back on giving God the proper credit for creating and using this music to heal infants and children, and for changing my life. I was working in a scientific environment, and I had enough problems introducing a new product, to risk sounding "weird." But I can now honestly say I believe the research and test results are simply measurements and verifications of what God is doing through this music.
